The French are called to the polls on June 9, 2024, to elect their future representatives to the European Parliament. What do you do if you can't make it to the polling station on that day? We explain how you can vote by proxy.

Before the end of June 2024, France will have elected its new Members of the European Parliament. But first, they have to be elected: for this, the French are invited to go and vote, on June 9, 2024.

All they have to do is choose the person they wish to elect, and slip their ballot paper into the ballot box. A gesture that is not necessarily within everyone's reach. Work, travel, illness, incompatible schedule, polling station too far from home... There are many reasons why a voter may not be able to get to the polling station. There is a solution to this problem: voting by proxy.

This system is very simple: it allows you to choose a voter who will vote in your place on polling day. Proxies can be requested at any time before the date of the vote. However, "in the event of a late request, given the time it takes for your proxy to be forwarded to and processed by the town hall, it is possible that your proxy will not be able to vote in your place ", explains the Ministry of the Interior website. In other words, although there is no legal deadline, this official document must be drawn up sufficiently in advance for the administration to take it into account.

In concrete terms, all you have to do to make your proxy is fill in the online form, then have it validated "in person" ata police station, gendarmerie post or consulate, within two months. On site, you'll need to present your "Maprocuration" registration reference and a form of identification."

Alternatively, you can go directly to one of the places listed above to fill in a paper form. Please note that to complete this document, you will need the national electoral number of the person to whom you are giving power of attorney (also known as the "proxy"). This number is shown on the electoral card.

The Ministry of the Interior also reminds you that you can cancel your proxy at any time (by filling in a form at a gendarmerie, police station, etc.). You can even choose to go and vote, even if you have made your proxy, provided that your proxy has not already voted on your behalf.

Note that there is no legal obligation for the proxy to respect your voting instructions. So you need to choose someone you can trust, who you can be sure will come to vote in the election!
