This year, the Ramadan in France began on the evening of February 17, 2026. This holy month of the Islamic faith encourages practitioners to fast from dawn until sunset. It is one of the five pillars of Islam. The end of Ramadan is marked by the Eid al-Fitr celebration. But when exactly will it take place?
First of all, Ramadan dates are set according to the Hegira calendar, also known as the Islamic or Muslim calendar . As this is based on lunar cycles, it differs by a few days from the Gregorian calendar to which we are accustomed. The start and end dates of Ramadan are first estimated according to astronomical calculations, before being officially confirmed on what is known as the Night of Doubt. On this night, the sky is observed to determine whether the crescent moon marking the start of the new month is visible or not.
