Did you want to discover the Hotel de la Marine’s collections for the New Year? Unfortunately, you will have to change your plans… And for good reason, the museum had to close because of a fire that occurred on December 31, 2022, at around 9 p.m.
In all, a hundred firefighters had to come to try and control the flames. What caused the fire is still unknown, Huffpost says. According to Le Parisien, firemen were working hard the day after, on Sunday January 1, to keep monitoring the place.
The fire did not damage the museum’s works, as the Hotel de la Marine stated this January 1st on social networks: “the ancient parts of the building and the displayed collections have not been hit by the disaster”, the museum tweeted.

Tweet reads: “A fire occurred in a mechanical room of hotel de la marine this Saturday December 31. The monument’s reopening calendar will be specified in the coming days. The ancient parts of the building and the displayed collections have not been hit by the disaster”.
According to firefighters, the fire started in a “mechanical room” located on the fourth floor where is the museum’s administrative department. It then reached the roof, as lieutenant-colonel Claire Boët told our peers from Le Parisien. In all, 30sqm of the roof have burnt.
The museum has been closed since then and will remain so until further notice: “Due to a fire that took place in a technical area, the monument will be exceptionally closed until further notice. The reopening calendar will be released as soon as possible”, the museum’s website reads. But good news: this Thursday January 5, the museum announced it will reopen the following day, on Friday January 6, 2023. As for Café Lapérouse, ateliers Mathieu Lustrerie and the heritage areas, they reopened this January 5.
As for people who booked a ticket during the closing dates, the Musée de la Marine reassured them stating tickets purchased for this period will be fully repaid. To complete the reimbursement process, please email the museum (address in our practical information box).
