Weather: what are the causes of the exceptional drought of this month of February 2023?

You have certainly noticed it: since February 1st, the temperatures are rising, but above all, there is a beautiful sun in our Parisian sky. Something to cheer up, even if the month of February has caused a great drought on the territory.

If you don't miss the rain, it must be said that since January 21, 2023, Météo France has not noticed any daily precipitation higher than 1 millimeter on the French territory. This is a good thing for those who were waiting impatiently for the return of the sun that we missed so much in January, even if a drought is to be feared in spring.

If January 2023 received enough precipitation, it is far from being the case for February. Indeed, an anticyclone has settled over the whole of metropolitan France - the reason behind the return of the sun - which has keptbad weather at bay and therefore limited precipitation. Since January 21, 2023, France has not experienced any rainfall episode, which is somewhat worrying after the exceptional drought of last summer, which depleted the water tables, especially since the drought should last for the next few days. Especially since some departments, such as the Var and the Pyrénées-Orientales, are already under water restrictions.

If everything can still be played out in March, provided that the bad weather becomes more severe, according to Meteo France, the month of February 2023 is still a sad record, with only 2.7 mm of precipitation measured, compared to an average of 38 millimeters during a "classic" February.
