Previously known as Avenue Bugeaud, this thoroughfare in the 16th arrondissement is to be renamed, by summer 2024, after Hubert Germain, the last Companion of the Liberation, who died on October 12, 2021 at the age of 101. This was the wish expressed by the Mayor of Paris at the Paris Council meeting on December 13.

Will there soon be an avenue in Paris named afterHubert Germain? This vow, adopted on the initiative of the City at the Paris Council meeting held on December 13, 2023, could thus give rise, by the summer of 2024, to the naming of Avenue Bugeaud, located in the 16th arrondissement, to rename it after the famous resistance fighter.

" The decision to remove his name from the Parisian nomenclature is based not only on the indignation of many Parisians, but also on the City's consultation of a large number of historians, researchers and associations," explains Paris City Hall in a press release, which recalls that Robert Bugeaud (1784-1849) was " guilty of exactions during the colonization of Algeria by the July monarchy ". He also " made a name for himself as 'the man from rue Transnonain', named after a massacre that took place in what is now rue Beaubourg, in 1834 ".

The City of Paris therefore wishes to rename the avenue Bugeaud after Hubert Germain. " In December 2023, the City of Paris will begin the process of de-naming the avenue Bugeaud (16th arrondissement) - the name given to it in 1864 - and renaming it avenue Hubert Germain," announced the City of Paris in the same press release.

Hubert Germ ain, who died on October 12, 2021 at the age of 101, was the last Compagnon de la Libération. As the City of Paris points out, he joined the Free French Forces on June 24, 1940, at the age of 20. Then, in 1944, he took part in the Provence landings. A solemn tribute was paid to him at Les Invalides at the time of his death.

" Committed to preserving its history and heritage, the City of Paris has no intention of removing statues or massively changing street names. The plaques on Avenue Bugeaud will be transferred to the Musée Carnavalet, to bear witness to this moment in the capital's history," explains the City of Paris, which points out that four places in the capital have been debaptized since 2001.
