Yvelines: free distribution of school supplies with no strings attached and free haircuts

In Mantes-la-Ville, in Yvelines (78), the Ensemble association is once again inviting families to its back-to-school distribution. On Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 4 p.m., it will set up its tables of free school supplies at Parc de la Vallée, open to all with no conditions. A solidarity initiative that’s already in its third edition.

Free school kits for everyone, with no means test

In the middle of the afternoon, the association hands out full school kits designed for both primary and middle-school students. The sets include notebooks, an agenda, geometry supplies, and a well-stocked pencil case—the kind of gear to help start the new school year with a lighter mind.

No screening is conducted among families who come forward: there is neither proof of income to provide nor any prior registration required. The aid is available to all, according to the Ensemble association.

Last year, roughly 300 kits were snapped up during the 2025 edition. That should equip a good portion of the town’s children just before the big day.

Trophies on offer and inflatable structures at Parc de la Vallée

Beyond the school bags, the event takes on the vibe of a neighborhood festival. Volunteer hairdressers and barbers are offering free haircuts on site, a small symbolic gesture before heading back to class. Inflatable play structures are also set up to keep the youngest kids entertained.

To man the stalls and supervise the afternoon, the association taps its three core members and about twenty regular volunteers, with new volunteers coming on board each year.

This festive gathering is also meant to ease tensions that can arise between young people from neighboring areas.

The town, home to around 22,000 residents, officially backed the 2025 edition, with free entry and a closing-day barbecue. Municipal support for the 2026 edition has not yet been confirmed, but the association is sticking with its annual gathering at Parc de la Vallée. Ahead of August 29, it’s also seeking donations of school supplies (notebooks, pens, pencil cases, backpacks), which can be offered through its Facebook and Instagram pages. The Mantes-la-Ville town hall also centralizes practical information for the municipality, particularly on education and registrations.

Back-to-School Solidarity Gains Momentum in the Mantois

This distribution sits within a broader trend unfolding in the Mantois as the 2026 back-to-school period approaches. In the neighboring municipality, Mantes-la-Jolie has decided to have school supplies funded by the town hall for its 34 schools, with an announced budget of €70,000.

For families who prefer to buy their own supplies, the back-to-school allowance can provide a welcome boost. On the project front, Mantes-la-Ville is looking to the future with a planned 18-class intermunicipal school set to open in 2027, expected to serve around 500 more students.
