Meta will use your Facebook and Instagram data to train its artificial intelligences. Posts, comments, requests to Meta AI ... everything goes as of May 27, 2025. Here's how to opt out.

Data alert! If you have a Facebook or Instagram account and are over 18, Meta - the parent company of these platforms - is preparing to use your public data to train its artificial intelligences. And it's going to start on May 27, 2025. You only have a few hours left to say no.

What data is involved?

Meta has announced that all public Instagram posts, comments, photo captions, as well as queries sent to Meta AI via Messenger, can be used to train its artificial intelligence models. This applies both to data already published and to future data.
The Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (Cnil ) specifies that WhatsApp, for the moment, is not concerned. So your private messages are not (yet) in the crosshairs.

What if I don't want to?

Meta gives you the right to object, but you have until May 27 to do so. You'll need to use a form available in your application settings.

On Instagram:

  • Open your profile.
  • Click on the three bars at top right.
  • Go to "Settings & Activity" > "Privacy Center".
  • Look for the Meta message and click on the word "oppose" in the text (in bold).
  • Enter your e-mail address associated with the account.
  • Click on "Send" and you'll receive a confirmation e-mail.

On Facebook :

  • Open your profile.
  • Click on the three dots at top right.
  • Go to "Privacy Center".
  • Look for the Meta message and click on the word "oppose" in the text (in bold).
  • Enter your e-mail address associated with the account.
  • Click on "Send" and you'll receive a confirmation e-mail.

This procedure only applies to data you have published. For data distributed by third parties, you need to fill in a second form, explaining which data is concerned and why you object.

Why now?

This project, which had been in the pipeline for a year, was blocked by European regulations. But since December, Meta has received the green light from the European Data Protection Committee, despite complaints from 11 countries.

In short, Meta will train its AIs with your content. You have until May 27, 2025 to say "no". After that? Too late...
