Paris: a sound-and-light show at the Trocadéro to mark the Battle of the Chesapeake

This year, the Ministry of the Armed Forces is commemorating the Battle of the Chesapeake, which sealed the French Navy’s victory over the British fleet. To mark the occasion, a free-to-view sound-and-light show is announced for Saturday, September 5, 2026 at the Trocadéro. More details to come.

Have you heard of the battle of the Chesapeake? Also known as the Battle of the Capes, this naval engagement took place on September 5, 1781, in the Chesapeake Bay, considered the United States’ largest estuary. On that famous day, the French fleet led by Admiral de Grasse defeated the Royal Navy, paving the way for American independence.

On Saturday, September 5, 2026, the Ministry of the Armed Forces will mark the Battle of the Chesapeake. "To celebrate this battle is to highlight the values of courage and audacity that allowed the enemy fleet to be repelled despite an unfavorable tactical context," the Ministry of the Armed Forces said on its website.

A free sound-and-light show open to the public

What’s on the agenda for these celebrations? A military ceremony planned to start at 6:00 PM on the Trocadéro Esplanade, followed by a sound and light show around 9:00 PM in the Trocadéro Gardens. The show will be free and open to the public for the occasion.

The sound-and-light show will revisit this landmark battle, leveraging a range of technologies—from dynamic lighting and 3D projections to water jets, smoke, lasers, and other specialized lighting. "Several scenes will come to life on the façades of buildings and on the Eiffel Tower," officials said.

Meanwhile, naval music ensembles, including the Bagad de Lann-Bihoué and the Music of the Navy, will perform on a central stage, moving to the rhythm of the different tableaux. Divided chronologically and by themes (the ocean of peril, the founding act, the Chesapeake’s glow, the Industrial Revolution, today’s missions and sailors, innovation for tomorrow...), the show is expected to last about 45 minutes.

Note that this commemoration of the Battle of the Chesapeake is part of the French Navy’s 400-year anniversary celebrations.

Expect traffic restrictions in the 16th arrondissement of Paris

Due to this event scheduled for September 5, 2026 at the Trocadéro, the Paris Police Prefecture has issued an order to temporarily modify traffic and parking in the 16th arrondissement.

Thus, all vehicle traffic will be prohibited on September 5, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., on the Trocadéro and 11 November square, "in the section between Paul Doumer Avenue, Georges Mandel Avenue and President Wilson Avenue," according to the Police Prefecture. Vehicles are also banned from circulating on September 5 between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on President Wilson Avenue, "in the section between the Trocadéro and 11 November square and Albert de Mun Avenue, on the odd-numbered side only."
