On Thursday, May 29, French Health Minister Catherine Vautrin announced a ban on smoking in places where children are present, i.e. no longer just indoors, from July 1, 2025. The government wants tobring about "the first smoke-free generation" in France, she told Ouest-France. As a result, the list of places where smoking is banned is expanding, and promises to be infinite, since the little ones could be anywhere!
Catherine Vautrin reminded us of the public health cost of smoking, with one in ten deaths linked to tobacco every year - the equivalent of 200 deaths a day. Passive smoking is also a real problem, which can affect children, whom the government wishes to"protect". Electronic cigarettes, on the other hand, are not affected for the time being. Failure to comply with the ban carries a fine of 135 euros.
Among the places concerned, which join public transport and other enclosed spaces, are parks and gardens, beaches, school grounds, bus shelters, stadiums and sports facilities, but not café terraces. An exclusion zone will be set up around schools, as the government wishes to prevent parents from smoking in the vicinity, as well as secondary school students, even though cigarette consumption is declining among the youngest age groups.
