Every day is a good day to decide tostop smoking. According to the Santé Publique France website, more than 75,000 people die from smoking every year, and there are six million victims worldwide every year. Tobacco is also responsible for one in three cancers, and can cause cardiovascular or respiratory diseases, and worsen conditions such as diabetes, ulcers...
Health organizations and the WHO therefore want to encourage occasional or regular smokers to give up smoking altogether. To this end, several operations and actions are organized throughout the year. On May 31, designated World No-Tobacco Day, even stronger measures are deployed.
Like the annual "No Smoking Month" in November, World No Tobacco Day aims toinform the general public andhelp all volunteers to quit smoking. It's an opportunity to take stock of the population's smoking habits and health, to better understand tobacco consumption, and perhaps put a stop to it.
In 2025, the WHO is particularly interested in consumption among young people, electronic cigarettes and the marketing tactics used by the tobacco industry to attract and retain customers. Varied flavors, misleading packaging and advertising: the world organization fears an increase in the number of smokers as a result of these sales techniques, particularly among teenagers.
" Theuse of nicotine-containing products, such as electronic cigarettes and nicotine sachets, is becoming increasingly widespread among young people. By 2022, an estimated 12.5% of teenagers in the [europ] region were smoking e-cigarettes, compared with just 2% of adults. In some countries, e-cigarette use among school-age children was 2 to 3 times higher than that of traditional cigarettes, highlighting a worrying trend that calls for urgent action ", warns theWHO.
To counter these trends, public services and health establishments are renewing their prevention initiatives for the general public, to help smokers and reduce passive smoking in public places.
