It's a tricky morning for users of the Line 8 of the Paris metro. Since 9 a.m. this Tuesday 9 December 2025, the traffic is completely interrupted between the stations La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle and République in the capital. The reason: a train stuck in service at the Madeleine station, as announced by the RATP on its social networks. The situation, initially expected to be resolved quickly, has dragged on for several hours, with the transport authority repeatedly pushing back its estimate for resumption of service.
The incident unfolded around 9 a.m., when a train became stranded at Madeleine station in Paris's 9th arrondissement. With the metro halted for an extended period, passengers found themselves in an unusually dire situation: they were forced to climb down onto the tracks to be evacuated. Scenes that vividly illustrate the kinds of ordeals faced by commuters in the Île-de-France transit network.
The RATP has confirmed a total shutdown of traffic between La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle, in the 15th arrondissement, and République, in the 11th arrondissement. This stretch accounts for a substantial portion of the line, one of the busiest and longest in the network, covering 23 kilometers and 38 stations. Passengers received no specific information during the evacuation, amplifying the sense of disorientation.
After more than an hour stuck in a stalled train, a passenger collapsed. The situation, already tense for travellers trapped in the tunnels of the Paris metro, grew even more acute. Emergency services required a full evacuation of the carriage, with passengers forced to walk along the tracks to reach the nearest station.
By 10 a.m., the incident was still being resolved. The RATP stressed the complexity of the situation, repeatedly pushing back its timetable for restoring service. According to the latest updates from the operator, traffic is expected to resume around 11 a.m. Technicians stepped in to get the train back in service and allow a gradual restart of operations.
For regular travelers on this line linking Balard in western Paris to Créteil - Pointe du Lac in Val-de-Marne, the incident underscores that outages can strike at any moment, even on one of the network’s major routes. Line 8 runs through four communes—Paris, Charenton-le-Pont, Maisons-Alfort and Créteil—and mainly serves the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 9th, 11th, 12th and 15th arrondissements of the capital.
Commuters can monitor real-time traffic updates on the RATP website or check the dedicated page for line 8 to get the latest travel information. In the event of a major disruption, it’s advisable to plan an alternate route for getting around Paris.
