The BHV, this iconic department store nestled in the heart of the Marais district, could potentially be taken over by the city? More than a month after controversy erupted over the opening of the world’s first permanent Shein corner, the Chinese fast-fashion giant, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has indicated she might consider purchasing the building if the opportunity arises.
During the Paris City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the mayor of Paris stated that "given the situation at BHV, which raises serious concerns about employment and the future of central Paris, I have decided, on behalf of the municipal government, to explore all options for action". She added that if the BHV "were to leave its premises, the city will examine all possibilities to position itself to acquire the building.".
Since passing into the hands of its neighbor—the BHV is located just opposite the City Hall—the municipality is considering a new future for this department store that has recently made headlines. Anne Hidalgo mentions a "large-scale project addressing the needs of commerce, economic activities, affordable housing, homeownership opportunities, and social housing." "A beautiful mixed-use space," she adds, "combining local services while maintaining commercial activity, but also serving as housing for Parisians."
