Bison Futé: busy holiday departures in Île-de-France — how to avoid traffic jams?

This weekend, April 17 to 19, 2026, marks the first holiday departures in Zone C, including Paris. Bison Futé forecasts orange traffic in Île-de-France on Friday and Saturday, with the heaviest congestion on the A10 and A6.

This weekend of April 17–19, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest spring time on the roads around Paris. The classic school-holiday shuffle is in full swing: holidays begin for Zone C, covering the Paris, Créteil and Versailles academies; the second week for Zone B; and the end of holidays for Zone A. As a result, Friday and Saturday are colored orange for departures in Île-de-France, according to Bison Futé. On Sunday, however, the roads look set to be much smoother.

Friday, April 17: the most challenging day to leave Paris

Friday is the day with the highest risk of weekend traffic. In terms of departures, the first slowdowns appear from late morning in Île-de-France, on the main routes out of the region. Traffic clearly tightens in the early afternoon, driven by home-to-work trips and holiday departures. To avoid the worst, Bison Futé recommends leaving or crossing Île-de-France before 10 a.m. or after 9 p.m..

This Friday, vigilance is likewise required in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region as people head back home. Traffic remains heavy throughout the afternoon and into the early evening, especially around Lyon. The busiest routes will be:

  • A7 (Rhône Valley), between Orange and Lyon, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • A46 (Lyon's eastern bypass), from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • A48, A41, A43 around Grenoble, Chambéry and Lyon, late afternoon

Saturday, April 18: The A10, A6 and A13 to monitor from early morning

The morning is shaping up to be busy for departures from the Île-de-France, with traffic intense from the outset on motorways A6, A10 and, to a lesser extent, A13. Bottlenecks ease progressively by mid-afternoon. If you’re heading toward Normandy, Brittany or the Southwest, it’s best to have left the Paris region avant 7h ou patienter jusqu'après 20h. Across the rest of France, Saturday remains green, so the pressure is mainly on getting out of Paris.

Sunday, April 19: the best window to hit the road

Sunday poses no major congestion nationwide. The only possible slowdowns are near major cities in the late afternoon and evening. It’s clearly the best day of the weekend to hit the road, whether you’re in Zone A, B or C.

How to get real-time traffic updates?

Established in 1976, Bison Futé remains the go-to source for real-time road information. Its website and mobile app let you check detailed forecasts, times to avoid, and the busiest corridors. Radio VINCI Autoroutes (107.7 FM) is also an excellent source for live traffic news on VINCI’s motorway network, with regular bulletins and practical tips. The site of the Ministry for Ecological Transition publishes official bulletins on a daily basis.

Finally, before you get behind the wheel, take a moment to check your vehicle’s condition. The government is currently warning about a recall campaign on certain Takata airbags that may fail. You can check if your car is affected at ecologie.gouv.fr; replacement is free at an authorized service center for the brand.

Safe travels to everyone, and may the road be as light as your luggage!
