Every year on June 21, the Fête de la Musique draws millions into the streets of rural villages and towns of all sizes across France. Music events also take place in museums, cultural centers, and concert venues. In Paris, there are, of course, plenty of free concerts on that day. Across Île-de-France, and especially in the Hauts-de-Seine, music lovers enjoy memorable performances by amateur or professional musicians alike.
But what exactly is the Fête de la Musique? Once a year, on June 21 (the summer solstice), this large, free, and inclusive music festival invites musicians of all levels—amateurs and professionals alike—to celebrate living music and to showcase the breadth and diversity of musical practices and genres.
Created by the French Ministry of Culture in 1982, the Fête de la Musique has since been exported abroad, becoming a national event in countries such as Luxembourg, Italy, Greece, Peru and Colombia. Over the years, the Fête de la Musique has invented and reinvented itself, becoming an emblematic event that we love to celebrate every June 21.
The Fête de la Musique marks its 44th anniversary in 2026! A chance to return to the basics, through a series of free concerts that are both festive and unifying. Whether on the street, in concert halls and venues, or in museums, and whether it’s classical, rock or electronic, the Fête de la Musique 2026 once again looks set to be glorious and uplifting.
