The Paris 2024 Olympics sites general arrangement map is complete for 2 years. Seine-Saint-Denis keeps its “host department” position with 4 venues and 8 disciplines represented. Extra sports will be mostly played within the city. Here is the definitive map of venues for the upcoming Olympic Games.
This announcement takes the reworking of the Olympics and Paralympics venue map made for the sake of savings into account. Budgetary cuts have become necessary since the health and economic crisis happened, and which impact was a game-changer for the upcoming Games calendar. This is why the Arena du Bourget (volleyball), and the Stade Pierre-Mauroy (soccer) and the Stade Jean Bouin (7 rugby) have not been selected for the Olympics adventure.
As planned, Seine-Saint-Denis department is mostly given pride of place for the 2024 Summer Olympics. In addition to the Olympics Village in Saint-Ouen, the Stade de France will house the opening and closing ceremonies, the athleticism and the rugby games.
Water-polo games (eliminatory legs), artistic swimming and diving will take place at the Centre Aquatique de Saint-Denis. Furthermore, a shooting booth will be set in La Courneuve. A rock-climbing spot will also be placed in Le Bourget.
Within Paris, Olympics venues set on the Place de la Concorde, Invalides, Grand Palais and the Arena Champ-de-Mars – in front of the Eiffel Tower – will house additional games such as break dance, skateboard and BMX Freestyle, as well as other sports – more regular for Olympic Games – such as fencing, archery, judo and wrestling. And surf is still to take place in Tahiti.
The Arena de La Chapelle is to house badminton and rhythmic gymnastics.
In Roland Garros, one can attend tennis and boxing. Under the pont d'Iéna, open-water swimming, marathon and 50-km walk, and road cycling, or even triathlon are planned. The La Défense Arena will house the prestigious games of swimming.
As for horse-riding, head to the Palace of Versailles, with an arena set in the middle of Le Nôtre’s gardens. The very site was designed to house pentathlon games. At the Bercy Arena, attend the basketball, artistic gymnastics and trampoline games.
According to OCOG chairman Tony Estanguet, “80% of venues will be set within 30 minutes from the Olympic Village, and 24 sports in a 10-km radius around the Village”. Honorable mention to handball, clearly the lucky winner of the new venue map lottery: instead to taking place Porte de Versailles, the handball games will be played at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, a gigantic 30,000-seat arena.
