The Olympic Aquatics Center is one of the very few sports facilities built exclusively for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a legacy for the people of Seine-Saint-Denis, a département in which one in two children can't swim when they start secondary school. Located a stone's throw from the Stade de France, to which it is linked by a footbridge spanning the freeway, it hosted the diving, water polo and artistic swimming events.
It was also intended to host the swimming events, but in the end proved too small, so the events were moved to the Paris La Défense Arena. Before becoming an aquatic center, this space was occupied by Engie's research center and the Landy gas plant, which supplied gas to the Paris region. From July 2025, the site will be open to the public for school sessions, swimming and diving for sport and leisure, as well as a fitness area and team sports fields, including nine padel courts and a climbing gym.
With its 10-lane pool, diving pool and 2,500-seat grandstand, the CAO will be able to host international competitions, including the 2026 European Swimming Championships. Thanks to its movable floor, which enables depths to be varied, the Aquatic Centre will be able to adapt to a wide range of uses! It will also serve as a high-level center for French athletes, with the Pôle France Plongeon.
The shape of the center is unique, with the world's largest concave wooden catenary structure. A low-carbon facility, the Aquatic Center is designed entirely from bio-sourced materials, with a roof covered in photovoltaic panels, making it one of the largest urban solar farms in the country.
To get to the pool, take metro lines 13 and 14 to Saint-Denis station, RER lines B and D to Stade de France station and tramway T8 to Saint-Denis - Porte de Paris station.
