Written by Camille Moreau and Olivier Treiner, What the Heck Is This Family?! playfully tackles the everyday challenges of a clan splintered across several homes. At the heart of the story is Bastien, 13, who must navigate six half-siblings, eight parents, and a family setup that’s becoming hard to keep straight.
Tired of the constant moving from one house to another, the kids decide to shake things up. They move into a large apartment together and compel their parents to take turns looking after them. The scheme upends the family dynamic and forces the adults to confront the contradictions in their own arrangement.
An ensemble comedy with a warm, ironic tone, C’est quoi cette famille?! delves into contemporary family models, cohabitation, and the growing independence of children. Its success spawned two sequels, C’est quoi cette mamie?! and C’est quoi ce papy?!, also available on Netflix on July 8, 2026.
What the Heck is This Family?! could appeal to viewers seeking a lighthearted French family comedy that centers on kids, separated parents, and the way daily life arms itself with new arrangements. The film isn’t aimed at those who expect a realistic, restrained comedy; its appeal rests on a deliberately amplified sense of a shared, collective situation.
