Saint Omer, the film byAlice Diop, has just won the César for the best first film, at the 48th ceremony, broadcast this Friday 24 February 2023. The film also won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was shortlisted for the Best Foreign Film Oscar.
Rama, a young novelist, attends the trial of Laurence Coly at the Saint-Omer court of assizes. The latter is accused of having killed her fifteen-month-old daughter by abandoning her on the rising tide on a beach in northern France. But during the trial, the defendant's words and the testimonies of the witnesses shake Rama's certainties and question our judgment.
