One of the 21 films in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Nostalgia didn't win any awards, but did attract the attention of Cannes audiences. Directed by Mario Martone, whose previous films are little known in France, this Italian feature takes place in the city of Naples, where Felice, played by Pierfrancesco Favino, returns to his hometown after an absence of 40 years. He rediscovers the place, the city's codes and a past that gnaws at him. The film opens in cinemas on January 4, 2023.

What's most fascinating about Nostalgia is Martone's way of filming Naples. A veritable city-character, the viewer discovers every nook and cranny with the protagonist. Naples is also an extremely cinematic city, allowing the film to impress visually with every shot. However, the film doesn't offer much more. There's not much of note in this stroll through the city's streets, set against a backdrop of gang warfare. The mystery surrounding the protagonist's past is quickly revealed, and the film's ending, as conventional as it is expected, disappoints.
