One of the 21 films in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Nostalgia did not win a prize, but it caught the attention of the Cannes audience. Directed by Mario Martone, whose previous films are little known in France, this Italian feature film takes place in the city of Naples, where Felice, played by Pierfrancesco Favino, returns to his hometown after 40 years of absence. He rediscovers the places, the codes of the city and a past that gnaws at him. The film will be released on January 4, 2023.

What fascinates from the start with Nostalgia is the way Martone films Naples. A real city-character, the viewer discovers every corner with the protagonist. Naples is an extremely cinematic city and allows the film to impress visually in every shot. However, the film does not offer much more. From this stroll through the streets of the city, against the backdrop of a gang war, not much is left to be seen. The mystery around the past of the protagonist is quickly revealed and the end of the film, as conventional as expected, disappoints.
