Previously known for his work as an assistant director, Jérôme Dassier signs his first feature film as a director. For this first foray, the filmmaker has surrounded himself well. In addition to Asia Argento, Jeanne Balibar (Illusions Perdues, Cold War, Les Misérables) stars in this quasi-close-up.

Our review of Seule : les dossiers Silvercloud

What a mess! Absolutely nothing goes right in this spy thriller, which smacks a little too much of the 2000s and its cheap productions of the genre. What's original this time around is the fact that the film is a closed-door affair in which only the character played by Asia Argento (who, perhaps because she plays in French, doesn't manage at all) appears on screen. The main problem with the film is that its pitch fits on a postage stamp, and both the script and the direction try to make up for it by complicating the set-up. As a result, the stakes are unclear and the audience quickly becomes bored.

By making much ado about nothing, often taking the viewer for a fool (flashbacks are there to remind you what you saw five minutes ago, just in case), multiplying clichés and over-emphasizing each scene with his editing or music, Jérôme Dassier creates an artificial rhythm and tension and signs here a crude and uninteresting film where even the ending is botched.
