It was one of the most eagerly awaited events of the Directors' Fortnight at the last Cannes Film Festival. The return to France of Mia Hansen-Løve, after her English-language escapade with Bergman Island. For Un Beau Matin, the filmmaker reunited Léa Seydoux and Melvil Poupaud in a bitter love story. This film was one of our favorites of the festival, and indeed of the year. See it in cinemas on October 5, 2022.
Winner of the Label Europea Cinema award, this is undoubtedly the finest film by Mia Hansen-Løve(Eden, L'Avenir, Maya). The filmmaker seems to get better with each film, and each of her works is better than the last. This time, she focuses on the life of Sarah, a young single mother played by Léa Seydoux, who juggles her job, her daughter, her ailing father and Clément (Melvil Poupaud), an old, long-lost friend who becomes her lover.
The filmmaker is reminiscent ofEric Rohmer 's gentler films, evoking this nerdy couple with their fascinating conversations. Above all, it's the secondary roles that give the film its special flavor. Pascal Greggory and Nicole Garcia lead the way, as Léa Seydoux's parents. Un Beau Matin is full of tenderness and a pleasure to watch.
