When you see the synopsis for Falcon Lake, you may be surprised by its brevity: "A story of love and ghosts", a false simplicity behind which hides a magnificent trial run for actress Charlotte Le Bon(The Walk, Yves Saint Laurent, Le Grand méchant Loup), who is stepping behind the camera for the first time. The filmmaker was inspired by Bastien Vivès' graphic novelUne Soeur. The result is an absolute favorite, and one of our favorite films of the year. Scheduled for release on December 7, 2022.
We meet Bastien, 13, "soon to be 14" he says, who is spending the summer with friends of his parents. There he meets their daughter, Chloé, 16. The two teenagers hit it off quite quickly, and while the young boy falls in love, the girl takes him under her wing. The two young actors, Joseph Engel (seen in Louis Garrel's early films) and Sara Montpetit, are quite bluff, and their chemistry is a sight to behold.
It's a tale of initiation, the story of a summer of all first times, as cinema knows dozens of them, but this one has a very special flavor. Like the protagonists, we don't want this summer, this bubble, to end. These teenage romances are moving, carefree, touching, inevitably tragic. And this tinge of fantasy completes Falcon Lake's unique atmosphere and setting.
