A trio we can't wait to see in theaters... The Marvels, a superheroic feature film directed by Nia DaCosta, opens in cinemas on November 8, 2023. It features the trio of heroines whose destinies are intertwined: Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau.

The Marvels trailer

Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris are back in their respective roles in The Marvels, having previously appeared in films and series(Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame for the former, Miss Marvel for the latter and WandaVision for the latter), much to the delight of fans. A film in which the three super-heroines will have to team up against their better judgement, their powers being unhappily intertwined, to solve the mystery of a giant wormhole linked to the Kree people.

Synopsis of The Marvels:

"Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unexpected consequences lead Carol to carry the burden of a destabilized universe... When her duty sends her into a strange wormhole, linked to a Kree revolution, her powers intertwine with those of her biggest fan living in New Jersey: Kamala Khan aka Miss Marvel. But also with those of Carol's niece, Monica Rambeau, whom she has never met. This unlikely trio must team up and learn to work together to save the universe as The Marvels".

Our opinion

It's as if we've heard it all before. We find heroines already seen here and there in Marvel productions, the indefatigable Samuel L. Jackson in the role of Nick Fury and the inevitable bad guy, this time a bad girl, played by Zawe Ashton. The aim is clear: to bring Captain Marvel face to face with the consequences of the heroine's actions in the first film. And it's a good move, as it avoids the binary confrontation of the good girls versus the bad girl, and makes this antagonist the good girl on the other side. Forming a team of three heroines is also the film's good idea, as the three actresses' complicity is so palpable. Special mention must go to Iman Vellani, in the role of Ms. Marvel, whose youth and energy bring the lightness that makes the film so endearing.

And yet, things didn't get off to a good start. With a non-existent promo due to a strike by the actors and writers, a running time cut to 1h45 (by MCU standards, that's a short film), heroines suffering from a lack of popularity, and a box-office flop predicted by all the specialists, The Marvels seemed buried even before its release. And yet, this step back, this tightly-knit narrative and a certain detachment from the rest of the official canon make it a shaky, admittedly, but seductive work.

The Marvels tells a secondary story, which could almost pass for a filler episode, and plunges us into the action in medias res, without taking the time to introduce us to the characters or the antagonist. This can be disconcerting, but in the end it's no bad thing, as director Nia DaCosta does her best to capture the chemistry between her three actresses. What's more, the film is amusing, and its absurd delirium makes it a UFO within the MCU: two sequences, one in the form of a musical, and the other with cats, will finish convincing you of this.

Of course, The Marvels is not without its faults. And these are the same as in previous MCU films: special effects far from commensurate with the film's budget, often haphazard editing, and a serious lack of spectacle, but perhaps that's precisely what makes The Marvels different from the others. It's not the blockbuster of the year, far from it, but the film is just as far from being the disaster announced everywhere.
