One of the most eagerly awaited series for Marvel fans, Secret Invasion ended this Wednesday, July 26. Teased since the Captain Marvel movie, the Skrulls ' invasion of Earth is a comic-book highlight, and many were eager to discover this story on Disney+. For the first time since his very first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in 2008, Nick Fury is the main character. For actor Samuel L. Jackson, it's the 12th time he's taken on the role of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s boss, who is the only character to have been part of the saga since the first MCU film(Iron Man).
This series is an opportunity to learn more about this iconic character's past. Above all, it launches an essential arc in Marvel mythology. A number of well-known actors are making their MCU debut with this series, includingOlivia Coleman(The Lost Daughter, The Crown) and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones).
Our verdict
Despite a surprisingly short season (6 episodes of 35 minutes each), Secret Invasion bores and disappoints. Fans of the MCU and Nick Fury 's character won't find much to like in the series, which fails to deliver on any of its ambitious promises. Where's the announced paranoid thriller? For months, Marvel has been teasing a work where no truth can be trusted, where the viewer's brain is constantly turned inside out, and where any character is a potential Skrull. Not so... The twists and turns are never surprising, and above all, they come far too late. Of the six episodes that make up the series, the first four stick to an annoying stalemate. When the story finally does move forward, the first thing you think is "what's it all for?".
In fact, Secret Invasion promised some nice surprises, with the arrival of stars such as Olivia Coleman and Emilia Clarke. With neither of them convincing, we can only hope for a brighter future in the MCU, because right now, it's not really that... In short, with its many plot shortcuts that turn into inconsistencies, Secret Invasion disappoints, right down to the final scenes, where even the resolution and final battle are rushed through in a matter of minutes. Once again, and this is almost systematic with Marvel series, we feel that if we cut out the long-windedness, the result could be a better-paced, higher-quality film.
