First film in French for Spanish director Isaki Lacuesta. His new feature film, One Year, One Night, inspired by Ramón González' autobiography, Peace, Love and Death Metal, will be released on May 3.
Carefree moments, laughter, love and friends were the daily life of Ramón and Celine, a young couple played by Noémie Merlant and Nahuel Perez Biscayart. Everything was going well in their lives until the evening of November 13, 2015, when both are at the Bataclan, with a couple of friends. Both survive the attack, but they are unable to resume their normal lives .
As the title suggests, the film follows the year after that night of horror. On the one hand, Céline completely represses the event and does not talk about it to anyone, on the other hand, Ramón starts a descent into hell and cannot live anymore. Both of them live this trauma in a totally different way and inevitably, it impacts their couple.
One Year, One Night is not so much a story of resilience as of post-traumatic stress disorder. Neither of them manages to overcome this trauma and they are torn apart. From then on, it becomes impossible for the couple to survive. Noémie Merlant and Nahuel Perez Biscayart are excellent in their roles and perfectly demonstrate the difficulty of moving forward as a couple, when the people in question are not moving forward at the same speed.
Of course, the film pushes some open doors, but such a subject is bound to bring great emotions, which certainly touch us, as the trauma is still fresh in all our minds.
