First French-language film for Spanish director Isaki Lacuesta. His new feature film, Un an, Une nuit, inspired by Ramón González's autobiography, Paix, amour et death metal, hits cinemas on May 3.
Carefree moments, laughter, love and friends were the daily life of Ramón and Céline, a young couple played by Noémie Merlant and Nahuel Perez Biscayart. All was well in their lives until the evening of November 13, 2015, when they were both at the Bataclan with a couple of friends. Both survive the attack, but are unable to resume their normal lives.
As the title suggests, the film follows the year after that night of horror. On the one hand, Céline completely represses the event, and tells no one, while on the other, Ramón begins a descent into hell, unable to live. Both experience the trauma in completely different ways, and this inevitably has an impact on their relationship.
One Year, One Night is not so much a story of resilience as of post-traumatic stress disorder. Neither of them can overcome the trauma, and they tear each other apart. From then on, it becomes impossible for the couple to survive. Noémie Merlant and Nahuel Perez Biscayart are excellent in their roles, perfectly demonstrating the difficulty of moving forward as a couple, when the people in question are not moving forward at the same speed.
Inevitably, the film hits a few open doors, but a subject like this is bound to stir up great emotions, which are bound to touch us, as the trauma is still fresh in all our minds.
