With thirteen video games released since 2014, Five Nights At Freddy's has left its mark on the horror gaming universe, with its dark atmosphere and iconic monsters, in the form of haunted animatronics. It was the perfect backdrop for the film industry to seize upon, and the famous Blumhouse production house is behind this adaptation. And when you consider the quality of the latest video game adaptations(Super Mario Bros and The Last of Us, to name but two), the project is bound to make you curious.
Five Nights At Freddy's airs on Netflix from February 8, 2025.
Synopsis: Mike, a troubled young man, looks after his 10-year-old sister Abby. He is still haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his little brother ten years ago. Having recently been made redundant, he desperately needs to find another job so as not to lose custody of Abby. So he accepts a job as a night watchman in a disused restaurant: Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. But Mike soon realizes that appearances can be terribly deceiving. With the help of police officer Vanessa Shelly, he is confronted by inexplicable supernatural phenomena at night and plunged into a nightmarish world...
And unlike the games, which plunged us straight into Freddy's for five nights of horror, the film sets us a long context, and a main character, Mike(Josh Hutcherson, unforgettable Peeta Mellark in the Hunger Games saga) a security guard beset by many personal torments. In particular, he is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his younger brother a decade ago. His search for a job to provide for his younger sister Abby leads him to Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, a seemingly unusual establishment. But as soon as night falls, the terrifying reality of the place is revealed.
And whether you're a fan of the video game or not, you might wonder who the film is aimed at. If you're looking for thrills and chills, you won't find them here. And even though the film was co-written by Scott Cawthon, the creator of "FnaF", gamers won't find much here either. Freddy's is more of a backdrop to an admittedly occasionally gripping story of child abduction, but this constantly distances us from the horror that Freddy's robotic monsters are supposed to evoke. In fact, their design and name is the only thing the films have in common with the games, so much so that the plot revolves around other themes.
Five Nights at Freddy's is a small film, which will be distributed directly on an overseas platform (Peacock, not available in France). And even though it will be released in cinemas in France, the film fits in perfectly with the logic of Blumhouse productions, producing dozens of low-budget, highly profitable films to finance their big event movies, although the quality of the latter isn't always up to scratch. The film may appeal to the curious who go to see it without knowing anything about it, but those who expect it will certainly be disappointed.
