Immaculate with Sydney Sweeney: Our review of the horror film and trailer

In Immaculate, Michael Mohan's new film, Sydney Sweeney plays a nun who turns to horror. In theaters March 20, 2024.

American actress Sydney Sweeney, discovered by the general public in The Handmaid's Tale, Euphoria and The White Lotus, takes on a role in Italy in Michael Mohan's film Immaculate, and it's a pleasant horrific surprise expected in cinemas on March 20, 2024. She reunites with the American director for whom she previously starred in The Voyeurs in 2021.

Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), a young American nun, moves into an isolated convent in the Italian countryside at the invitation of a priest(Álvaro Morte, El Profesor de la Casa de Papel). The welcome is warm, but Cecilia soon realizes that her new home harbors a sinister secret, and that terrible things are happening there...

A role in which the actress was not necessarily expected, but which suits her particularly well. A desire, perhaps, to break away from the glamorous roles that had previously clung to her skin and show another side of her game, that of a religious icon whose body disappears beneath a white wimple and a long ecclesiastical gown - and who recovers it only when the story shifts into horror, when the immaculate woman finds herself inoculated.

If the premise is classic, Michael Mohan avoids falling into the routine religion-possession combo, preferring to bathe his tale in sadism under the guise of devotion, suffering mistaken for love, and feminism in the background. There are a few bursts of gore that put the body through its paces at just the right moment, culminating in a final, harrowing scene of screams and silence so far removed from Hollywood cinema (the film is an Italian-American co-production, and you can feel it) that it could have come from one of Pascal Laugier's first films.
