Andrea Arnold is a regular at the Cannes Film Festival. In turn member of the jury in 2012, president of the Critics' Week jury in 2014 and president of the Un Certain Regard jury in 2021, the British filmmaker has also won the festival's Prix du Jury three times, with Red Road, Fish Tank and American Honey.
In 2024, Andrea Arnold returns to official competition at the Cannes Film Festival with Bird, her new feature film that returns to places she knows well: the English suburbs. The cast includes Barry Keoghan(Dunkirk, Killing the Sacred Deer, Saltburn), Franz Rogowski(Disco Boy, A Hidden Life, Happy End) and Nykiya Adams.
At the age of 12, young Bailey lives with her brother Hunter and father Bug, who is raising them alone in a squat in North Kent. Bug doesn't have much time for them, and Bailey, approaching puberty, is looking for attention and adventure elsewhere.
"The English filmmaker, who recently returned with Cow, a film about the fate of a cow, is back with Bird, a film that doesn't tell the story of a bird, but rather the fate of a young girl in an English suburb who tries to escape the social fatality to which her birth has destined her. It's pure Andrea Arnold, a handheld camera style, a film about learning, and cinema that is absolutely necessary to tell us the story of countries," said Thierry Frémaux about the film at the festival press conference.
