For those who don't know,Acid is a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival which, for over 30 years, has been spotlighting singular French and international works by emerging, independent filmmakers. It has just unveiled its 2024 selection, which will be screened at the Cannes 2024 Festival, and Maisam Ali's In retreat is one of them.
Somewhere between late autumn and early winter, a man returns home to a small mountain town. In his fifties, always absent and late, having missed his brother's funeral, he lingers on the threshold of the old house - what more could he hope for than to delay his arrival by one night?
With In Retreat , starring Indian actor Harish Khanna, the Iranian filmmaker, originally from the Himalayan region of Ladakh, makes his first feature-length film after several short films screened in France, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and India. Acid points out that, as a filmmaker, "Maisam Ali tackles the themes of belonging, travel and the feeling of disconnection".
