Few documentaries have been selected for this year's Cineastes Fortnight 2024, but Eryk Rocha and Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha's La chute du ciel has. The Brazilian duo 's documentary tells the story of the Yanomami people, introducing us to their beliefs and their relationship with the sacred world.
For her previous project, Riverbank Project: about rivers, buiúnas and fireflies, Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha set out to listen to Brazilian rivers transformed by human action. For his part, Eryk Rocha is no novice either, having won the Œil d'or at the Cannes Film Festival for his documentary Cinema Novo.
Quinzaine des Cinéastes review: "Based on the cult book La Chute du ciel (The Sky Falls) by Davi Kopenawa, famous shaman and symbol of the Amazonian peoples' struggle against gold mining and forest exploitation, this documentary places us, without ethnological distance, at the heart of the rituals of the Yanomami people and their relationship with the sacred. The beauty of the film lies in the way the filmmakers are able to vary distances without angelism."
