Created by Matthieu Rumani and Nicolas Slomka, Culte : Loft Story charts the birth of reality TV in France by pulling back the curtain on the launch of Loft Story on M6 in 2001. The series follows a group of young producers who must, in just a few months, devise an unprecedented program in the French audiovisual landscape. It focuses less on recalling the show's moments and more on its making, the internal tensions, and the media storm that accompanied its broadcast.
The synopsis places the action at a pivotal crossroads. Behind the two-way mirrors, a still-young team sets out to craft a new format, while tackling the political, media, and cultural reactions it sparks. Culte: Loft Story shows how a concept pitched as an innovation for the network quickly becomes a social phenomenon, then a topic of nationwide controversy.
The ensemble features Marie Colomb, Anaïde Rozam and César Domboy. The drama follows producers willing to go to any lengths to push their project, in a world where the stakes of ratings, image and power are constantly at play. This approach places the series squarely in the realm of the dramatic series, with material drawn directly from real-life events.
Initially released on Prime Video, Culte : Loft Story finds a new resonance with its airing on M6, bringing it closer to the story it tells. The series does more than reconstruct a bygone era: it shows how Loft Story became a turning point in the way television is produced, watched, and discussed in France.
Note that Culte: Loft Story is the first installment in an anthology later continued with Culte: 2Be3, devoted to the genesis of the boy band. Here, the series indeed revisits the Loft Story case and the emergence of reality TV in public discourse in France.
