A Woman at Play, directed by and starring Anna Kendrick, will be released on Netflix on October 18, 2024. This thriller, inspired by a true story, transports viewers to 1970s Los Angeles, where a young woman aspiring to be an actress crosses paths with a dangerous serial killer. Adapting a landmark episode of the TV show The Dating Game (the American equivalent of Tournez Manège), the film explores the unsettling collision between budding stardom and the darkness hidden behind a charming smile. Starring Tony Hale and Jedidiah Goodacre alongside Kendrick, this production promises palpable tension and strong emotions.
In the heart of Los Angeles in the 1970s, a wave of murders terrifies the city. Anna Kendrick plays a young woman eager to make it in Hollywood, taking on a series of small roles and auditions. Her luck seems to change when she's chosen to take part in an episode of the popular TV show The Dating Game. What she doesn't know is that one of the other contestants is an elusive serial killer, responsible for several murders across California. Based on true events, A Woman in The Dating Game recounts how this criminal's participation in a reality TV show shocked the American public. As tension mounts and police leads close in on the killer, the film offers a gripping blend of drama, suspense and thriller.
Une femme en jeu will appeal to fans of psychological thrillers and captivating biopics. The film stands out for its ability to blend historical reality and fiction, reminiscent of works such as David Fincher 's Zodiac or Mindhunter, which delve into the intricacies of the criminal mind. Anna Kendrick, known for her roles in comedies such as Pitch Perfect, reveals here a strong dramatic talent, both in front of and behind the camera. The plot, inspired by a true story, lends the film a chilling authenticity.
