His graduation film Niagara was selected for the Cannes Film Festival's Cinéfondation in 2014, and his first feature Plan 75, which was screened in the Un Certain Regard section, won the Caméra d'Or in 2022. This year, Chie Hayakawa returns to the Croisette with his second feature - and a return to the upper echelons of the competition.
Entitled Renoir, this new film by the Japanese filmmaker has been selected for the official competition at this 78th edition of the world cinema event. It is thus competing for the prestigious Palme d'Or, which will succeedSean Baker's excellent Anora. The cast includes Yumi Kawai, Lily Franky and Hikari Ishida.
Renoir will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The release date in French cinemas is not yet known.
Synopsis: In the heart of summer 1987 in Tokyo, when Japan is at the peak of its economic growth, an eccentric and sensitive 11-year-old girl has to cope with her father's terminal cancer and her overworked mother's stress. Each is desperate for human interaction.
