Cristian Mungiu is back at the Cannes Film Festival 2026 with Fjord, his new film in the official competition.

The selection for the Festival de Cannes 2026 has been unveiled for this edition, which will run from May 12 to 23. The film Fjord by Cristian Mungiu is featured in the official competition, joining a lineup that spotlights the best of today’s cinematic creativity and, indeed, vying for the Palme d’Or 2026.

Cristian Mungiu is a Cannes regular. Nearly 20 years ago, in 2007, the Romanian filmmaker was rewarded with the prestigious Palme d'Or for his second feature 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Five years later, he swept the Best Screenplay prize with his film Beyond the Hills, which also earned a double Best Actress award for the actresses Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur.

Finally, in 2016, it was Baccalauréat, his fifth feature, that took home the Directing Award. A festival regular, as they say!

Synopsis : The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple, settle in a fjord-side village and quickly strike up a close friendship with their neighbors, the Halbergs. Their children grow very close despite growing up under different influences. When the teachers notice bruising on Elia, the eldest Gheorghiu child, the community starts to wonder whether the parents’ traditional upbringing could be to blame.
