Don't call it Fifa anymore... The world-famous video game is changing its name to EA Sports FC. Electronic Arts has given up on the famous license, due to its high price tag. Here's everything we know about the game.

In less than 30 years, it has become one of the world's best-known games, and an undisputed leader in the sports game world: Fifa is soon to bow out. Or rather, the saga is changing its name to EA Sports FC. This year, fans of the license will still be able to enjoy Fifa 23, but from next year, the saga will continue under the title of"EA Sports FC 24".

Electronic Arts has abandoned its partnership with the Fédération Internationale de Football, because the price of the license is too high: from $150 million to $250 million, according to France Inter. The video game publisher therefore prefers to change the identity of its flagship game.

Will future Fifa games change drastically? Aficionados can rest assured: EA has retained its agreements with other soccer leagues and federations, and can therefore continue to use the names and images of well-known soccer teams and players. On the other hand, the World Cup should no longer be playable in future titles of the license.

All you need to know about the next game

In July 2023, EA revealed a number of interesting tidbits about this upcoming game, due for release on September 29, 2023 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. But first, let's start with a trailer.

Game synopsis:

EA SPORTS FC™ 24 plunges you into the heart of The World's Game to bring you the world's most realistic soccer game with HyperMotionV, Opta-optimized Game Styles and a redesigned Frostbite™ game engine that revolutionizes how you move, how you play and what over 19,000 athletes look like in every match.

Electronic Arts has therefore chosen my Hypermotion V technology (only available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series) to set itself apart from its competitors. This technology captures and digitally recreates the exact movements of real athletes, making the characters and their actions as realistic as possible.

The game features over 700 clubs and some 19,000 players to choose from, over a hundred stadiums and some thirty different leagues. Leagues welcome both male and female players, and your team can even be mixed! Depending on your mode of play, you can opt for a career as a player or manager, improve the skills of your footballers...

Of course, multiplayer modes are also available. The good news is that cross-platform functionality is also announced for this game, in both single-player and multiplayer versions! However, this feature is not available on Nintendo Switch.

Fifa is a real golden goose for EA, which is keen to make the most of this best-seller. With 29 installments of the game, 325 million copies sold since 1993 and sales of $20 billion, Fifa has established itself at the forefront of the videogame scene and still seems indisputable.

The Fédération Internationale de Football, for its part, is not totally leaving the world of video games. In a press release, FIFA states that " Gaming in soccer (...) cannot be the sole preserve of a single party controlling all the rights. Signing contracts with other game publishers would be of paramount importance to FIFA ( ...)FIFA will be launching games and virtual experiences around the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and other projects are also being studied with several publishers, with a view to the next Women's World Cup. "

In one form or another, Fifa games have a long life ahead of them...
