Probably THE horror game to get for Christmas... The Callisto Protocol, developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton, has been available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series since December 2, 2022. A horrific opus in Dead Space mode presented at Summer Game Fest 2022, via a trailer.

The Callisto Protocol gameplay trailer:

What do we see in this trailer? Monsters, of course, and a prisoner trapped, attacked and killed in Alien: The Eighth Passenger mode... Atmosphere. The story takes place in the Black Iron prison on Jupiter's moon Callisto. You take on the role of a prisoner trying to escape, only to discover that experiments are being carried out on his fellow prisoners, turning them into monsters.

Synopsis of The Callisto Protocol:

"In this third-person survival horror, the player takes on the role of Jacob Lee, a victim of fate thrown into Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary located on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. When the inmates begin to transform into monstrous creatures, the prison is plunged into chaos. To survive, Jacob must fight his way to safety to escape the prison, while uncovering the dark and disturbing secrets buried beneath Callisto's surface. Using a unique blend of shooting and close combat, Jacob will have to adapt his tactics to fight the rapidly evolving creatures while scavenging to unlock new weapons, equipment and abilities to outrun the growing threat and escape the horrors of Jupiter's Dead Moon."

A game that is also, and above all strangely, reminiscent of Dead Space. The reason? First of all, Glen Schofield, the father of the 2008 PS3 and Xbox 360 release, is at the helm of this new opus, but there are also similarities in the game's interface, with the hero's life bar integrated into his neck. But nothing to do with Dead Space, I promise! The game is scheduled for release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series on December 2, 2022. We can't wait!

Our review of The Callisto Protocol:

The Callisto Protocol is an interesting, even intriguing game for a survival horror. Graphically speaking, it's flawless, offering impeccable quality and dynamic graphics that are very pleasing to the eye, despite the atrocities the player has to face in the course of the game. The light and shadow effects are also particularly well executed, making it easy to immerse yourself in this horrific SF universe.

As for the story, it's fairly classic, but works rather well. We particularly appreciate the performance of Josh Duhamel, who plays Jacob Lee, the protagonist of the software, giving a little intensity to the adventure, which is a little too quiet for our taste. And therein lies the problem with The Callisto Protocol: its staid, ultra-repetitive and rapidly tiring gameplay, offering only melee attacks with a pistol or baton, dodges and the use of a magnetic glove. This limited gameplay is accompanied by equally repetitive areas to explore, always featuring the same mechanics and the same enemies.

In spite of this, The Callisto Protocol remains a good entry point for gamers who aren't big fans of survival horror (I promise, no jumpscares), but it's also a nice game, pleasant to play, promising a fine adventure all the same. A must-see for the curious.
