Synopsis of Crimson Desert:

"Dive into the heart of the continent of Pywel, torn apart by an unprecedented war for power. Face countless challenges and dangers, as the beginnings of the catastrophe that threatens Pywel begin to manifest themselves. To save the continent of Pywel from the impending catastrophe, the Grey Manes are waging fierce battles. Despite all the adversity they have to face, they relentlessly pursue their epic quest to accomplish their mission".

Since it was first announced in 2020, the software has continued to arouse curiosity. We follow the story of Kliff, the protagonist, in the region of Hernand, on the continent of Pywel. On the agenda: mystical creatures and hidden treasures. The game borrows from iconic titles such as the last two Zelda games for its freedom of action, Final Fantasy XVI for its aesthetics and graphics, and Elden Ring for its worthy confrontations. Whether duels, battles against large groups of enemies or confrontations with bosses, players will be constantly challenged by a variety of mechanics.

Our take

For seasoned RPG players, it’s a safe bet you’ll quickly spot mechanics that clearly draw from some of the big-name titles: Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin’s Creed, The Witcher 3, Baldur’s Gate, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and the list goes on. The game offers a wealth of features that will specifically please explorers: looting, material gathering, fishing, mini-games, side quests—there’s no shortage of activity. So much so that the main storyline can end up taking a back seat. In terms of combat, it’s somewhat less engaging, sometimes repetitive even with a mini-challenge system. If you’re the kind who seeks elaborate battles à la Elden Ring or Lies of P, you might not find what you’re after.
When we first started playing, the gameplay felt laborious, with unclear tutorials and a few unintuitive mechanics. Yet after a few days, patches began to steadily improve the overall experience. For instance, early on we noticed NPC dialogue lines growing repetitive, which was fixed soon after. It was also fairly frustrating to accidentally draw your bow and not know how to sheath it without losing an arrow—an on-screen prompt was added later.
