After Greece, Egypt and Scandinavia... Chinese mythology! Age of Mythology: Retold invites you to discover the Immortal Pillars DLC on March 4, 2025, at the same time as the PS5 version of the game. Available in early access from February 27 for Premium Edition owners, this DLC will introduce Chinese mythology with a new pantheon, mythical units and a new scripted campaign. This announcement marks the return of China to the franchise, following its appearance in Tale of the Dragon in 2016.
The Chinese pantheon will feature twelve new deities, including Fuxi, master of civilization, Nüwa, creative goddess, as well as Gonggong, god of floods, and Zhurong, deity of fire. Each god has specific powers and offers mythical units such as the Qilin, the Qinglong dragon and the Taotie. The single-player campaign will offer nine levels, featuring vast cities inspired by ancient China, spread over seven new maps, with iconic architectural features such as the Great Wall.
Virtuos developers expressed their excitement about the expansion, saying, "We are honored to have this opportunity to present our mythology, culture, stories and ancient Chinese civilization to the world. Our team has immersed itself in the illustrious eras of Chinese history, striving to bring to life its formidable military units and their distinctive artistic expressions." For its part, Forgotten Empires stresses that the expansion rests on three fundamental pillars: "innovation, authenticity and, most importantly, fun".
Our review of the Immortal Pillars DLC for Age of Mythology Retold:
Is the introduction of Chinese mythology a successful challenge for Age of Mythology Retold? It would seem so, and in a number of ways. Starting with its lifespan... Neither too long nor too short, the DLC is completed relatively quickly, without leaving us hanging. An ideal lifespan too, avoiding the pitfalls of boredom or length on certain campaigns.
What also makes all this work is, of course, thestorytelling, which allows Chinese mythology to be rightly introduced into the game, without neglecting other mythologies. This is how we find other characters from the game, arriving at just the right moment, so as not to disorientate us too much. It's a refreshing mix that adds grist to the mill.
Gameplay is only slightly different from the base game, keeping the basic Atlantean/Greek mechanics to a minimum. Enough to satisfy gamers who are already familiar with the game. This DLC is a must-have if you're a fan, or just curious, about the Age of Mythology franchise. And if this isn't the kind of game you'd like to play, you'll have to pass... All that's left is for you to make up your own mind about this DLC.
With this new extension, World's Edge intends to offer a more accomplished experience than that of the previous DLC. Unlike Tale of the Dragon, widely criticized for its numerous bugs, Immortal Pillars seems to benefit from more rigorous development. ThePremium Edition will also include another future DLC, whose pantheon has yet to be revealed.
All game updates will be rolled out simultaneously on all platforms, ensuring a seamless experience for players on PC, Xbox Series and PS5. So get ready!
