No, this isn't a new Animal Crossing game. But it's still good news: Animal Crossing: New Horizons is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on January 15, 2026. The game even benefits from new features for this transition to Nintendo's next-generation console. And that's not all! Those who own the game on the first Switch are also entitled to a major free update.
More than five years after its release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons seemed to have been somewhat neglected by Nintendo. Fans of the franchise despaired with each Nintendo Direct, seeing that their favorite game had been forgotten by the developers. This unexpected news is therefore welcome news for the gaming community.
Like others before it, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been adapted for the Switch 2. This special edition, which is only compatible with the new console, features improved graphics, enhanced multiplayer functionality , a new item, and gameplay compatible with mouse mode.
The Joy-Con 2 mouse mode allows you to create designs, redecorate, or arrange your home with greater precision. The megaphone, which can be used with the console's microphone, allows you to call out to an island resident to easily locate them. Finally, on the Switch 2, you can welcome up to 12 people to your island in online mode.
If you already own the game on Switch and want to play it on Switch 2, a paid update is also available. Your save data will be transferred from one console to another if you link the same user profile on both consoles.
For players who are staying on Switch 1, a free update is also set to be released on January 15. This bonus content brings a new hotel to your game, run by the Admiral family, as well as new themed items and characters... The update also introduces Dream Islands, an exclusive feature for Nintendo Switch Online members, and a new space that you can completely redesign to your liking.
See you in early January to discover all these new features in your Animal Crossing: New Horizons game!
