He's back in his own game: Fox McCloud and his teammates set off on an adventure on Nintendo Switch 2. The Star Fox title released on June 25, 2026—here's our take.

Aboard your Arwing, battle enemies in style and foil the schemes of the terrible Andross! Fox McCloud and his crew are back on consoles with their very own video game... Not as fresh as it sounds. Star Fox is a remake of Lylat Wars, a redesigned and modernized version to be experienced exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 since June 25, 2026.

Star Fox trailer:

The Star Fox synopsis:

« Fox McCloud and his team are back in Star Fox, a remake of Lylat Wars, the Nintendo 64 classic, exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Get ready for intense aerial battles and reclaim Lylat from Andross's clutches... one planet at a time. »

Nintendo stunned players on May 6, 2026, with an announcement that was unexpected but very warmly received by longtime fans. A Nintendo staple is making his return. Less known to younger audiences, Fox McCloud is the star of the Star Fox series, which debuted in 1993. The elite pilot fox has appeared in several Star Fox titles, is a recurring character in Super Smash Bros., and he also appears in the film Super Mario Galaxy, released recently in cinemas.

It had been a few years since the Star Fox saga had gathered dust on Nintendo’s shelves. Now it resurfaces with a new entry that could win over fans—or just as easily disappoint them.

Indeed, the new Star Fox game is a remake of Lylat Wars (1997), a title that was itself a remake of Star Wing. So it feels a little like déjà vu... Still, fans of Fox McCloud and his squad can look forward to once again sharing in a grand space–faring adventure alongside this iconic character.

If you’re not familiar with this license, this is your chance to dive into a universe built on space‑faring dogfights and bold challenges. The remake flags modernized, refreshed designs, more detailed cinematics, full French voice acting, and new features that take advantage of the Switch 2... In short, a game brought up to date, letting you relive our classic adventures.

Our take on Star Fox:

Two-hour review on Nintendo Switch 2

A mercenary squad, space battles aboard a starship—on paper, this game has all the makings of a winner. Yet, at the end of the adventure, it leaves us with a touch of disappointment...

Starting with the positives, there is quite a bit to praise. Star Fox has undergone a full makeover, now compatible with next-gen consoles: we get polished, high-definition cutscenes and solid visuals during the gameplay. The game runs smoothly, controls come quickly to grip, and players can explore distinct universes that really test your piloting skills.

It’s accessible to kids, and the story can appeal to younger players discovering these cool, well-developed characters. For adults, however, the whole package feels a little thin...

Star Fox looks impressive; the cutscenes lend more weight to the narrative, and the chapters flow well—perhaps a bit too well. The game is fairly easy, and the campaign can be completed in just a few hours. Sure, you can extend the life by unlocking and completing all bonus missions and replaying the campaign to boost stats and discover alternate routes... but it still ends too quickly.

Players who love a challenge and chasing 100% scores will have a field day. For everyone else, disappointment is real. The game’s longevity is limited, and grinding the same missions over and over to chase the top score isn’t always exciting.

We didn’t get a chance to test the multiplayer mode, which could be a strong selling point for friends to enjoy this title a little longer. Star Fox is a solid entry point into the franchise on modern consoles, but it won’t add much for those who already played Lylat Wars or Star Wing.
