This shop was founded by a Colombian, Elena Farah. Coming to Paris in 1978 after studying art in Bogotá and then in London, she started making piñatas in the mid-1980s, becoming one of the first to bring this craft to France. In 1986, she established her company La Piñata, actively participating in trade shows and events celebrating Mexican culture and helping to popularize this vibrant tradition among French audiences.
In 2002, with the support of an interest-free loan from Paris Initiative Enterprise, the artist took a bold step forward by opening the first Parisian store dedicated entirely to piñatas, in the 10th arrondissement. Following the success and rising demand, she expanded her vision in 2006 by integrating a social mission, establishing a workshop within a correctional facility—combining artisanal craftsmanship with an approach to social reintegration.
Originally, the piñata wasn't just reserved for birthday parties as we know them today. Long before our era, in northern Italy, a popular game involved hanging a clay jug filled with sweets, which was then shattered with a stick. The act was simple but meaningful, as the falling treats symbolized sharing and abundance. Over time, this tradition made its way to Spain, where it became part of local customs, before crossing the Atlantic during the age of exploration.
It’s in Mexico that the piñata has become deeply ingrained in popular culture. It takes on a central role in Christmas celebrations, especially during the posadas, which begin on December 16 and gather together neighbors from the same neighborhood. Here, the piñata gains a symbolic significance—representing the struggle between good and evil, with the shattered object revealing sweets and fruits as the reward. While its precise origins are still debated—whether influenced by Asian or Arab traditions—Mexican artisans have played a key role in shaping the piñata as we know it today. They transformed simple clay pots into vibrant, iconic shapes that are now an essential part of festive celebrations.
Before even thinking about breaking it, the piñata gets ready. It’s always sold empty, giving you full freedom to fill it according to the party’s vibe. Candies, small toys, confetti or paper surprises naturally find their way inside, guided by a simple idea: the piñata is primarily a symbol of abundance. Once filled, it needs to be hung high, securely attached to a rope looped around a beam, tree branch, or ring, so it can be adjusted during the game. The goal is clear: the piñata should stay just out of guests’ reach, yet remain clearly visible at the center of the party space.
The game then continues with a circular round. A participant is chosen, blindfolded, and gently spun around before trying to hit the piñata with a stick, guided by the other players. To ensure everything stays safe and smooth, adult supervision is essential when children attempt to break it: one person supports the player and watches over the circle, while another manages the rope that raises and lowers the piñata. Only one person plays at a time, and the stick remains a manageable size, with the piñata always held above everyone's heads. When it finally breaks, it’s the highlight of the party: eyes are uncovered, surprises spill out, and everyone rushes to gather the loot. A lively, joyful moment—provided safety rules were anticipated, goggles removed, and the area cleared of obstacles.
