The Kabuki theater will take center stage at the Japan House Culture Center on Thursday, April 9, and Friday, April 10, 2026, offering audiences a chance to explore the art of the onnagata — the traditional female impersonators — alongside renowned actor Nakamura Takanosuke.

Are you familiar with kabuki? Combining theater, dance, and music, kabuki is regarded as a true performing art in Japan. Its roots date back over 400 years. Kabuki also features a highly codified style of acting, with elaborate makeup and rich stage setups. One of its unique aspects is that female roles are played by men, known as onnagata. Over the centuries, these performers have honed their craft, creating a sophisticated art of disguise and developing techniques that are unique to kabuki itself.

On Thursday, April 9, and Friday, April 10, 2026, the Maison de la Culture du Japon in Paris invites you to explore kabuki through the art of the onnagata. To do so, the Japanese cultural center will host the young kabuki actor Nakamura Takanosuke. Born in 1999, Nakamura Takanosuke made his stage debut at just two years old in the production of "Shakkyo." A testament to his rising fame, the actor has already received several awards, including the New Talent Award from the Japan Arts Academy and the New Talent Prize at the National Arts Festival.

On April 9 and 10, 2026, at the Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris, Nakamura Takanosuke will take the stage to showcase his makeup routine and costume preparation. He will also perform a snippet from "Fuji-musume" ("The Wisteria Maiden"), a classic piece revered in traditional Japanese dance. Following this, Nakamura Takanosuke will step into the role of tachiyaku, the male character, transforming into a lion in the performance of "Shakkyo" ("The Stone Bridge").

If you've always dreamed of experiencing kabuki firsthand, especially the artistry of the onnagata, then don't miss this unique opportunity. Head over to the Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris on April 9 and 10, 2026, at 7 p.m. The event, lasting two hours including intermissions, requires a ticket. Prices range from 18 euros (discounted rate) to 20 euros (full price). Tickets go on sale starting March 3rd via the official website of the Maison de la culture du Japon. The performance will be held in the Grande Salle, located on level -3 of the building.
