No passport or long-haul ticket needed: Passion Japan transports you to the heart of the archipelago without leaving Paris. From March 19 to August 23, 2026, the La Villette Tent Space in the 19th arrondissement hosts this immersive exhibition that invites visitors to explore the many facets of Japan.
The journey unfolds like a leisurely stroll. It begins in a traditional neighborhood of Kyoto, then continues through the bustling streets of Tokyo, before taking a peaceful pause in a zen garden designed for tranquility and reflection. At each stop, iconic elements of Japanese culture come to life: samurai, tea ceremonies, architecture, cuisine, fashion, manga, and cosplay. Visitors experience these through life-sized recreations, authentic artifacts, and immersive sound and visual environments that truly capture the spirit of Japan.
The highlight of the exhibition unfolds with an immersive experience dedicated to ukiyo-e — the Japanese art form meaning "floating world." Hokusai, Hiroshige, and other masters come alive around visitors through stunning large-scale projections and digital animations, providing a modern take on this iconic art style.
The visit finally extends into a boutique and an oversized stand offering Japanese street food outdoors. Suitable for the whole family, Passion Japan offers a taste of Japan's diverse facets—blending rich cultural heritage with vibrant contemporary energy—delivering an immersive escape right in Paris.
Our opinion:
Right from the entrance, the concept is clear: a relatively minimalist space, almost subdued, with black walls and scattered display cases highlighting objects and staging. Visually, it creates a sleek and elegant atmosphere, though it might initially feel a bit subdued. The exhibit covers many facets of Japanese culture — from traditions and pop culture to cuisine and lifestyle — aiming for a comprehensive overview. It’s rich in content, yet sometimes a touch superficial. A few themes, especially at the beginning, would have benefited from deeper exploration to leave a stronger impression.
Multiple soundtracks overlap, making it sometimes tricky to identify their origins — one is background music, the other from an interactive installation — which can cause slight confusion. The latter part of the tour gains momentum, with immersive rooms & moments of real reflection. One of the most memorable highlights remains The Great Wave off Kanagawa, which immediately captures attention: you could easily spend minutes simply observing it, immersed in a soothing, gentle soundscape.
At the end of the visit, visitors are directed to the boutique, filled with small objects that make it tempting to pick up a souvenir. And a pleasant surprise outside: a large street-food stand serving Japanese cuisine extends the experience. Open daily from 12 PM to around 8 or 9 PM, it offers various specialties to enjoy on-site, with some tables and planned entertainment. Free access with the exhibition ticket (or €2 in addition) is a real bonus.
We feel the admission price, particularly for children aged 4 to 11, is somewhat high considering the experience on offer: the presentation is polished and enjoyable, but not always rich or memorable enough to fully justify the cost.
