The Maillol Museum in Paris: discover the museum dedicated to the sculptor, its collections and news

Do you know the sculptor Aristide Maillol? If the answer is no, then you need to schedule a visit to the Musée Maillol, located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, without delay.

Right in the heart of the 7th arrondissement, between rue du Bac and boulevard Raspail, lies a museum that is often overlooked by Parisians. The Musée Maillol is a private cultural institution dedicated to the work of French sculptor Aristide Maillol (1861-1944).

The museum exhibits numerous sculptures by the artist, mainly nudes, as well as several paintings and drawings by Maillol. Large-scale exhibitions are regularly organized in the museum's spaces: these temporary events usually focus on modern and contemporary artists and cultures.

The building that houses this art venue also has its own history. In the 18th century, the nuns of the Récollettes convent erected several buildings in the Rue de Grenelle, and offered the City of Paris a plot of land to create the Fountain of the Four Seasons, a remarkable historic monument adjacent to the museum. After the French Revolution, the land was bought back and converted into housing. The walls have been home to famous tenants such as Alfred de Musset. In 1955, Dina Vierny, Maillol's companion and model, bought the building. The museum itself opened in 1995, under the presidency of François Mitterrand.

Coming to the museum

Today, the Musée Maillol is open daily from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, even on public holidays. A one-way ticket gives access to both the exhibitions and the permanent collections. An elevator gives disabled visitors access to all areas of the museum. Strollers are not permitted.

The museum houses a bookshop-boutique , a checkroom, and a hidden café in the basement. The café Prévert is a vestige of the cabaret opened by the two brothers in 1951: the museum was then an art and party venue, attracting all the artists of Paris.

To get to the museum, you have several options: you can take the metro (line 12 Rue du Bac or Sèvres-Babylone, line 4 Saint-Sulpice or line 10 Sèvres-Babylone), the RER (line C Musée d'Orsay) or one of the many bus lines that serve this district.
