The show Noir, Juif et Borgne – Once Upon a Time Sammy Davis Jr. traces the life of a major 20th-century performer. Created by Hugues Duquesne and Larry Benzaken, this production pays tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. on the occasion of what would have been his 100th birthday, December 8, 2025. The artistic team emphasizes a desire to delve into the story of a music-hall icon whose journey raises questions about identity and reflects the major cultural issues of his era. Initially performed on December 8, 2025, the day of his centenary, the show will return to the Café de la Danse for two more performances on January 19 and 26, 2026.
On stage, Larry Benzaken plays Sammy Davis Jr., accompanied by musician Robin Lebon. Together, they bring to life a musical odyssey combining musical theater, biographical narration, and percussion rhythms. This approach allows us to explore the many facets of the artist's career: a child from Harlem who took to the stage at the age of three, a soldier during World War II, an actor, dancer, singer, member of the Rat Pack, and close friend to figures such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and John F. Kennedy. Franck Lebon's musical creation combines percussion, keyboards, loops, and samples, reflecting the diversity of influences that marked the work of Sammy Davis Jr.
Hugues Duquesne's staging draws on contrasts to evoke a life marked by struggles, commitments, and artistic excellence. The sets are designed by Caroline Lowenbach, the costumes by Justine Rouaix-Berné, and the lighting by Thomas Rizzotti. Claire-Elsa Misrahi is the production manager.
This production by 20h40 Productions and Art&Sté, supported by Sacem and the Culture with Private Copy initiative, offers an immersive look into the life of an artist with a diverse career. Blending storytelling, live music, and highlights from their life's milestones, the show shines a spotlight on a unique artistic legacy built on nuance, openness, and a desire to challenge traditional labels. Catch this captivating performance at the Café de la Danse on January 19 and 26, 2026.
