Starting October 1, 2026, Saint-Roch Church will morph into an immersive experience. Blending monumental 3D video mapping, a poetic theatrical narrative, and live music with a choir and orchestra, the piece invites you on a journey through the History of Art, in the parish of artists.

Known for its historic ties to the arts world and its architectural treasures, the Saint-Roch Church opens its doors in the 1st arrondissement of Paris for a magical interlude. For 45 minutes, its vaults and chapels come alive under projections of a 3D video mapping. The monument’s carved and painted details reveal themselves in a new light, heightened by the illumination to offer a true 360° living fresco, in the wake of the churches Saint-Eustache and Saint-Sulpice before it.

Designed to appeal to the whole family, the story unfolds through a theatrical narration. The plot centers on a warm, collaborative exchange between the young choirboy Jules-Robert de Cotte and the King’s famed gardener, André Le Nôtre. Through their dialogue, audiences discover, with a light touch, the major chapters of Art History that have shaped the site, at 8:30 p.m. or 9:45 p.m.

If the visual experience is meant to dazzle you just as much on Wednesdays and Thursdays, it takes on another dimension on Friday and Saturday evenings with the presence of the Sequentiae Choir and Orchestra. Directed by Mathieu Bonnin, the ensemble brings together 30 musicians to perform a live score and make the centuries-old stones of the nave resonate to the rhythm of instruments and voices.

Expect to pay between 30 and 40 euros depending on the session you choose, with plenty of discounted rates available. Also note that some seating can offer a slightly reduced view depending on the spot, on the side of the church (and thus cheaper if you’re on a tighter budget), but the sonic magic and high projections remain fully accessible to everyone.

Our take

After settling into the church pews, the show kicks off with 45 minutes of visual spectacle! Note that the seats at the back of the nave offer the best vantage to take in the full mapping, while the front rows offer a striking proximity to the musicians if that’s your preference.

The experience finds a pleasing tempo, alternating imagery-driven narration with pure moments of contemplation set to the orchestra. This live concert adds real dramatic heft to the story, amplified by surprises at the heart of the pulpit, such as the appearance of a lyric soprano or a trumpeter at various moments.

The visual immersion impresses with the breadth of subjects covered, ranging from astronomy and sculpture to floral motifs and stained glass. The only drawback is that the narration lacks a bit of accessibility: with its phrasing and vocabulary that can be a bit too advanced for younger audiences, the text feels somewhat demanding for children in particular.

Visually, while the video mapping beautifully complements the nave and choir, the absence of projections on the dome sometimes gives the impression of splitting the show in two. Some sequences with abstract geometric lines are less captivating than the warmer, more colorful scenes, which verge on wonder as they leave us dreaming and awed.

An intense and lively spectacle, sure to appeal to art and architecture lovers alike, in the heart of one of Paris’s most beautiful churches, just a stone’s throw from the Tuileries!
