Forcenés is the latest production by director Jacques Vincey, set to premiere in February 2026 at the Théâtre de la Concorde. Based on the eponymous book by Philippe Bordas, published in 2008, the theatrical project, according to the press release, draws on a literary material composed of fragmented chronicles—bordering on prose and poetry—that explore the legendary figures of 20th-century cycling.
Based on the presentation materials, an actor pedals nonstop on a stationary bike throughout the performance. This real physical effort forms the core of the theatrical setup, which blends physical performance, contemporary theater, and video. The pedaling is designed to influence a flow of images and sounds, combining cycling archives, physiological data, and immersive soundscapes. The artistic brief emphasizes that the goal is to enter the body to understand the mind—showing not just the inside of the body but also the heroic imagination it embodies.
The text by Philippe Bordas is designed to unfold within the breath of the performer. According to the program notes, speech arises from effort, aligning with the heartbeat and breath, transforming athletic feats into a form of song. The production aims to explore the interplay between pain, speed, and exhilaration, questioning the drive to surpass oneself and the pursuit of ultimate intensity. This perspective resonates with the contemporary surge of extreme sports and reflects a mythic, epic lineage that the author proudly embraces.
Jacques Vincey, former director of the National Drama Centre of Tours, is at the helm of this staging. This project is part of a journey characterized by powerful adaptations and a constant focus on the connection between the body, voice, and stage design. The production is set to premiere during an intense 2025-2026 season, which will also feature the director’s rendition of Cynthia Fleury’s The End of Courage followed by Forcenés.
Performance is entrusted to Léo Gardy, an actor trained at the Kourtrajmé School, whose personal journey intertwines with high-level cycling. The set design and lighting are crafted by Caty Olive, with video creation by Othello Vilgard, and music and soundscape by Alexandre Meyer. According to the production team, the overall concept presents a minimalist and immersive setup where theater and sports performance converge.
The show will be available to audiences at the Théâtre de la Concorde from February 18 to 28, 2026.
