The Grand Palais is devoting a major retrospective to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec from October 9, 2019 to January 27, 2020. An exhibition co-produced with the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée de l'Orangerie and the Réunion des musées nationaux, with the support of the city of Albi and the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec.

Toulouse-Lautrec from every angle... The Grand Palais is devoting a major retrospective to the artist, known for his paintings of the Parisian night world, from October 9, 2019 to January 27, 2020. The exhibition aims to revisit and rehabilitate three rejections that condition the current vision of Toulouse-Lautrec: a certain contempt for the values of his class, a neglected art market and an overexploited world of nightlife and commercial sex.

In all, some 200 works attempt to replace this"conflicted vision of his modernity" with a more positive one. A singular artist who succeeded like no other in translating the world"with a unique force, making 'present life' more intense and meaningful". A painter who also drew close to photography, aware of the power of both amateur and professional photographers.

And a favorite subject, an obvious image of "present life": the"Paris of interloped pleasures and modern alienations, from the cancan to the brothel", of which he was as much an accomplice as a judge. Toulouse-Lautrec is thus"a pugnacious and comical interpreter, terribly human in the sense of Daumier or Baudelaire", without ever setting himself upas "the accuser of urban vices and impure affluents".

And at the heart of the exhibition is a focus on his correspondence with Manet, Degas, Forain and Ingres, which enabled him to"transform his powerful naturalism into a more incisive, caustic style". The exhibition also attempts to highlight the strategy developed by the painter to reconcile the public face of his work with its more secretive and committed side. How about a dive into the world of Toulouse-Lautrec, folks?

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
