Toulouse as you've never seen it before! The Musée de Cluny invites you to discover its latest exhibition, Toulouse 1300-1400: l'éclat d'un gothique méridional, from October 18, 2022 to January 22, 2023. More specifically, the exhibition explores the history of the Ville Rose's foundation in the 14th century, and its apogee.

At that time, Toulouse was one of the largest cities in France (it joined the Kingdom of France in 1271), alongside Paris, Orleans, Rouen and Lyon. Particularly well-developed economically, it was at its peak during the first half of the 14th century, and has retained its personality over the years. Toulouse also benefited from the installation of the French Popes in Avignon, who were often linked to theUniversity of Toulouse, but also to the convents of the city's mendicant orders (Franciscans, Cordeliers, Dominicans and/or Jacobins).

In the first part of the exhibition, you'll discover how the city was organized, as well as the way Toulousans lived at the time, through ceramics and epitaphs. In the second part of the exhibition, visitors are invited to discover a selection of masterpieces - including magnificent polychrome sculptures dating from the 14th century - around four statues from the chapel of Rieux, now no longer in existence.

"Toulouse 1300-1400" also features miniatures, with some fifteen illuminated manuscripts and folios on display. These bear witness to the originality of Toulouse's illuminators, inspired by the work of Parisian illuminators and the works of Catalan and Italian artists. Finally, the last part of the exhibition presents the influences of these illuminators between Toulouse, Avignon and the Pyrenees. Works from the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, but also from museums in Pamplona, the Vatican library, the Louvre and major Parisian libraries.

A great opportunity to discover Toulouse from a different perspective, through the eyes of history... Shall we drop by the Musée de Cluny, folks?
