It's a well-known venue for lovers of Japanese culture. Nestled in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, a stone's throw from the Eiffel Tower, the Maison de la culture du Japon offers a rich and varied program of events throughout the year, designed to take us on a voyage of discovery. While an exhibition on ecology will soon be on offer to visitors, the Maison de la culture du Japon is organizing a small exhibition on fusuma.
Fusuma is an opaque screen that has been used for a thousand years in Japan as a movable partition or sliding door in traditional Japanese washitsu rooms.
At the time, fusuma also served as interior decoration, " reflecting the owner's vision of life, family, profession and social rank ", explains the Maison de la culture du Japon.
Considered a work of art, fusuma is being honored this winter by the Japanese cultural center. Entitled " Fusuma, at the crossroads of art and craft ", this small exhibition can be viewed free of charge in the entrance hall of the Maison de la culture du Japon, from February 4 to 15, 2025.
Through this installation, organized by the Japan Fusuma Industry Association, visitors can learn more about the materials, tools, ornaments and techniques involved in making a fusuma. Because fusuma is much more than just a movable partition; it has real artistic value. Made from wood and paper, fusuma combines the kumiko assembly technique with washi paper collage.
At this exhibition dedicated to fusuma, billed as the first of its kind to be presented outside Japan, the Japanese cultural center also unveils a reconstruction of a traditional tatami room.
To find out more about fusuma, head to the Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris from February 4 to 15, 2025. The installation can be seen in the reception hall on the first floor. Admission is free, Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 7pm.
